The project

The purpose of the project is to undertake a traffic, transportation, and visitor management study and plan for the Butrint World Heritage Site, including Butrint National Park. The first phase involves the study of the current state considering all factors affecting the area, especially the increase in visitors and the effects of climate change. The second phase involves the proposal of traffic management actions with related proposals for access to the site by sea and land, while protecting the archaeological site and the surrounding environment.

Our role

Our role: UNEEDIT is the Team Leader and is responsible for the following key activities:

  • Collection of data and information.
  • Analysis of current baseline transport conditions (traffic flow modelling, demand forecasting, road network, parking).
  • Analysis of the projected traffic development impacts and climate change adaptation.
  • Identification of alternative access and future parking arrangements.
  • Proposal of eco-friendly transport methods and integrated transport solutions.
  • Infrastructure and service requirements assessment.
  • Stakeholder engagement.
  • Development of the Traffic Management, Transport and Visitor Management Plan.
